RADIOACTIVITY

Measuring radioactivity in materials and the environment is a fundamental tool for ensuring safety, public health, and environmental protection. The presence of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides can affect the quality of soil, water, and air, as well as the preservation of building materials and cultural heritage. Having reliable data on the distribution and intensity of radioactivity not only allows compliance with current radiation protection regulations but also helps understand the natural and anthropogenic processes that lead to the accumulation or dispersion of radioactive isotopes.

To this end, ISOCORE is equipped with advanced instrumentation for assessing natural and anthropogenic radioactivity in environmental samples and structural materials. Measurements are performed using gamma spectrometry with a hyperpure germanium (HPGe) detector with high energy resolution and low background, ensuring high precision in the detection and quantification of radionuclides present even at very low concentrations.

In addition to these analyses, Uranium isotope ratio measurements can be performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), a technique that provides extremely detailed information on the isotopic composition and provenance of the analyzed materials. Furthermore, ISOCORE is equipped to determine tritium (H-3) using liquid scintillation, a particularly sensitive method that allows for the quantification of this radionuclide even at very low concentrations, making it of great interest for water monitoring and environmental studies.

The accuracy and reliability of the data produced make these investigations essential for the radiological characterization of materials, environmental monitoring, and the development of interdisciplinary research projects in the fields of materials science, nuclear technology, and cultural heritage conservation. The resulting assessments offer qualified support at both the scientific and applied levels, helping to strengthen understanding of natural processes and ensure high standards of safety and sustainability.
