AUTHENTICATION

Many of the non destructive lab services proposed by ISOCORE are routinely used to assist scholars of art in the authentication of artifacts both by the determination of the composition and/or the provenance of the materials used (i.e. by means of stable isotopes (IRMS and ICPMS) and by the evaluation of the epoch of the realization of the manufact. In particular, X-Ray Fluorescence analyses are able to establish the percentage of different metals in coins, to identify the chemical elements in the pigments and binders of a painting, to reveal the presence of elements due to atmospherical agents (such as Sulfur or Chlorine), as well as characterize of the constituent materials of paintings, frescoes, and artifacts of historical and artistic interest, as a support for the understanding, conservation, and restoration of cultural heritage

We also use Radiocarbon Dating for the determination of the age of organic supports of paintings (such as canvas or wood), which may help in the attribution of an artifact to an artist. The Bomb spike method is finally very effective in the detection of forgeries in the case of recent (after 1955) falsifications of artworks due to authors previously active.
